Geospatial Fire Data

Nukewatch has been utilizing satellite-based fire detection data and fire intelligence information published by the US Forest Service Active Fire Mapping Program. The information in these data are dynamic and updated twice daily. The information is represented as an overlay on Google Earth and is in the form of a KML (Keyhole Markup Language) file. This file can be obtained at

Select the “Fire Detection: current” option to download the KML.

Double click the downloaded file to launch Google Earth (with the overlay applied to the continental US.

Navigate to the Los Alamos area of northern New Mexico

(Lat: 35°52’51.84″N/Long: 106°17’41.67″W) and zoom in to see the level of detail you wish.

The colored blocks represent the fire detections at a spatial resolution of 1km for the past 6 hours, 6-12 hours, 12-24 hours and the previous 6 day period. Each fire detection is depicted as a point representing the centroid of the 1km pixel where the fire is detected.

  1. Perhaps I’m missing something, but what are the latitude & longitude of Area G?



  2. It’s a link under the map center page:

    It just downloads the KML file (not a page itself) Then if you have Google Earth, clicking the KML in your downloads folder will launch Google Earth and overlay the data. You will still have to navigate in to the area of interest, Los Alamos, because the overlay has all fires in continental US.
